Hello!
Welcome to my channel! I'm taking a different approach with this channel unlike some of the other audio channels who provide subjective product reviews. I'm more interested in seeing how these speakers are constructed, TS parameters of the drivers, and their crossover designs. I think knowing this info is much more informative than some subjective review by a person I don't know. But I will still provide my own subjective reviews of the products I do look inside videos of. :)

A Look Inside The Sony SA-CS9 Compact Subwoofer
I recently purchased a Sony SA-CS9 compact subwoofer to see what all the hype was about. This subwoofer has been on the market for quite some time now and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. In this video I tear down this small subwoofer and go over the T/S parameters of the driver, cabinet construction, and then take a look at the amplifier. Could there finally be a decent compact subwoofer at an affordable price? Let's find out...

Upgrading My KEF Q350 Speakers - Resolving Cabinet Resonances and Upgrading Crossover Parts
Просмотров 12 тыс.Месяц назад
In this video I upgrade my KEF Q350 speakers with the hopes of making them sound better. If you saw my look inside video on this speaker, then you know the damping inside the cabinet, and quality of some of the crossover parts leaves a lot to be desired. In this video I measure the cabinet for resonances and work on resolving them. Next I turn my attention to the crossover to see if upgrading s...

Excellent, i want to upgrade the crossover & damping of the cabinet of my Q350's... this is a very good video for me...i know i can get exact same value of air cored inductors from Dayton Audio but this will help me greatly, good idea chamfering the inside of the drive unit apertures... Mundorf caps are very nice but i could only find 4.7mfd but they do 2.2mfd so could parrallel them...good job, i'm gonna do up my Q350's..👍
G.R. Research is going to have field day with these!
Not the best midrange, a little low on detail when played low!
The real audiofilos not use subwoofers, sorry.
They seem to be good constrution. But woofers are to small for my taste to make the room dance in typical old school cerwin style.
I have two SA-CS9 on my 5.2.2 for the past 4 years and for the money I paid for them I been happy with them. 😊
Your Q diagram looks like it was for sealed boxes, but the point still holds. This driver would work great as an open baffle or in a back loaded horn. I would say the box is small and the response is probably pretty peaky. That is just going by the T/S. It is also inefficient. With all that said, on sale, it's not a bad buy for a budget rig. It no doubt pairs well with the other sony gear.
the speakers are $449 a pair because they are made in china - china has given the world plenty of nice things that are otherwise unobtainable due to overwhelming cost ...
Just subscribed. I love the fact that you take apart speakers so we can see what is being used. Would love to see you take take apart some expensive brands to see if they are really worth the ridicules price they are charging
I did a tear down of the Focal Aria 906 and I was pretty disappointed by that speaker considering the $2200 price tag.
Class AB isnt automatically better, this isnt 1995 anymore. In fact, especially at the budget level, class D is far superior for subwoofer frequencies and performance. Lol at the ignorant throwback though. I own Parasound AB and Orchard Audio class D for my speakers. Guess which amps are better?
A well designed class A/B amplifier is better at "fidelity" than a Class D amplifier and I stand by that statement! I have a 3k Rotel Class D amplifier (RMB-1575) and it has no where near the fidelity of my other amplifiers based on class A/B designs. If you understand what pulse width modulation is in class D amplifiers, then you should understand why fidelity is better in a class A/B amplifier vs class D. Amplifier designs are all based on compromises. It all depends on what you are looking for out of an amplifier. Efficiency? Sound Quality?
They went for what works, no audiophoolery, like die cast basket drivers and over the top crossover parts. Your ears don't care about that nonsense at all
The problem with this type of active subwoofer is that they burn out quickly, that's why I have the speaker and a professional amplifier separately, and I can have a much more powerful subwoofer than those sold on the market, like Sony or another similar one.
High level input is the best hifi option.
"Class A has higher fidelity than class D" - INCORRECT!
He wasn't comparing a class A to class D!!! LOL!
@@dans8935 He said the above
@@nickwilson2318 What?! He said "class a/b amplifiers also have higher fidelity than class D amplifiers". No mention of "class A". It's right there at 5:50 second mark! The below is a direct quote from Google AI so it looks like he is right unless you have proof you want to share. "Yes, Class A/B amplifiers generally have higher fidelity than Class D amplifiers. Class A/B amplifiers are known for their high-quality sound and low distortion."
Class A/B are kinda the best of both worlds between efficiency and sound quality. Class D amplifiers suck harder than Class A and all of its issues. Like volume versus power output on class D is such a WTF relationship, where as on A/B it’s 1:1 linear. Which might play into why it’s so much more harsh typically on class D with higher volumes, im not exactly sure. But I and many others have found that class D amplification on high-end speakers when you listen loudly gets fatiguing faster, a lot faster than everything being the same just using class A/B. .
Class A, is the most linear and lowest in distortion. But, it’s also the least efficient.
Pretty cool and even Mr Rabbit likes it.😁👍
Great review! Love these! Would be really really awesome if you compared this Sony sub vs the Vera Fi Caldera 10 (both have high level inputs) both are $199. I think the specs could be similar but both decent quality!! 🎉
Thanks! Vera-Fi Audio is sending me their 10" version once they are back in stock. :)
May I suggest a peek at the innards of KEF KC-62 sub 😊
Is that a push pull design subwoofer? It looks cool, but I doubt it would come apart easy. :(
This is almost the exact same subwoofer that they produced 10 plus years ago. The Sony SAW2500 was also a great subwoofer for the money. I recently purchased one for 30 dollars used. The internals look almost exactly the same.
Sony's been using those transistors for many years...I pull them out of receivers made all the way back to the 1990's
Nice video like always, thanks
You should measure the SPL at 1 meter. By the way, my QSC AD-S28Tw subwoofer is 118DB at 1 meter.
I have this subwoofer paired with the Sony SS-CS5 speakers. I'm powering the setup with a Douk Audio M1 Pro amp. For the price, this setup makes a great 2.1 system for the living room, whether I'm playing movies or listening to music through a vintage JVC CD player.
Looks like Sony just killed it with that whole line of speakers. Great deal for budget folks.
I was considering this, but I'm glad I came across the RSL Speedwoofer 10e which was just $300 vs this Sony which was $250 at the time but there's no comparison, the RSL is superior in that price range and even out performs more expensive subs.
You made the right choice. I had 2 of the Sony CS9 subs and they were weak. Seemed low on volume/power. Had to turn the gain up to like 75% to get half way decent bass. I really noticed the difference, when I compared it to a used PSB SubSeries 1. The PSB destroyed it, by being way more punchy, with powerful bass, and is only an 8". I ended up selling the Sony's after.
The Speedwoofer 10E is a great value for $300 delivered in the US.
Save your money for a $300 RSL 10e folks. And to the reviewer, thanks for sharing 👍
If u were blindfolded it would be hard to tell the difference. I would bet u couldn’t, LOL
@Bhall912e I would bet you could, LOL
Concur. The 10E is insane good for $300.
That’s what I’m doing.
@@Bhall912e 300w rms, down to 26hz the Sony doesn't stand a chance
Great video as always! Did you try plug the port and see how it performs 'sealed'? What crossover point did you use in your system with this budget sub? Cheers
I have a 16 yr old sony sub with dual 10 inch woofers. One fires into the box from the bottom and one fires forward. Big beefy surrounds and 250 watts. It gets down for sure.
Another great video! What is the RMS and peak power of this sub?
Thanks, Audiomainia. I believe the RMS power is 115 watts. The spec sheet for the Sanken darlington transistors, MN2488 and MP1620 are good for 150 watts according to the data sheet, so I think Sony might be a rating their amp on the conservative side.
@generationbehindhifi Thanks so much my friend.
Do most of you remember when this sub went on sale for $99?
I have heard these were available for $99 pre-covid, but after COVID you don't get much for $99 bucks anymore. We had massive inflation these last 4 years and sadly prices have gone up big time. :(
This one or the Heco you reviewed?
I think most people shopping for the SA-CS9 wouldn't be cross shopping with the Heco subwoofer because it would be too big. With that being said, if space is not a limitation for you then go with the Heco! It will hit much harder and will deliver more output than the Sony. However, I don't think the Heco sub is available anymore. That sale price was only good until stock ran out and I believe it has. If you got one at the $229 price, you stole it! That was a phenomenal sale price and like all good things, they eventually come to an end. :(
If you can will you make a $1500 or less best speaker buy video ❓ I think 🤔 you have had a few bookshelves to try. I've never heard JTR speakers and there prices. Wow. Still I have been looking at Arendal, SVS, KEF, and Shu audio. Spelling might be wrong on Shu. I think might be Zue audio. Interested on your thoughts. 👍 Thank you
I really appreciate the suggestion, but my bread and butter are the look inside videos. I did take a stab at creating reviews on speakers and subwoofers but those videos never received the views that my look inside videos receive so I stopped doing them. All reviews are based on subjective opinion (how they sound) so I highly recommend you listen to them for yourself and make your own determination. What you like might differ from what I like. I don't have any experience with Zu audio, but have heard good things about them. I did a look inside video on the SVS Ultra Evolution bookshelf speaker and I really liked them, so much so that I kept them. I'm also a fan of the KEF R3 Meta. I know the R3s are a bit above your $1500 price point but they are worth getting if you can stretch the budget. I plan on getting a set of R3s for my bed room system because that's how much I enjoyed them during my demo. IMO the KEF R3 truly is an incredible speaker for $2200 a pair.
@generationbehindhifi I definitely love your videos and appreciate your knowledge.👏👍😎
@ Thank you! Happy to help when I can.
Very nice budget woofer. I was surprised at the build quality. 👍 Hey what app are you using on your phone to test your subs❓
Great vid. I have this sub and also an SVS in another set up. This sub, while it can't keep up with the SVS, sounds great for the money!
Nice! I'm interested - is it sane to buy it, and after some time upgrade parts, clog the cabinet for the sound cleanliness may be? What is wattage of the amp? Transformer looks quite powerful, may be it can pump it even in the closed box? Or we'll need better driver then? Thanks for the video!
Thanks! I wouldn't buy it to upgrade it unless you like tinkering with this stuff like I do. Finding a 10" driver that will do well in a small cabinet like this might be challenging unless you like high q bass alignments. Amplifier in the Sony is good for 115 watts.
Try a Stevie Ray Vaughan ‘Tin pan Alley’ or Tight rope’ tune
No love for Pearl Jam?! That's one of my favorite bands. :)
You gotta upgrade the subwoofer to a higher end model
lol! You're a bad influence. I'll never be able to get rid of it if I modify it! I wouldn't mind modifying the Vera-Fi Audio Caldera 12 subwoofer though. The cabinet in that subwoofer is pretty nice for a $400 subwoofer.
Great video though otherwise 🥹👍
So class D as a topology has less “fidelity” than class AB? Please stop spreading this false bullshit. Makes ya look like a donkey.
I had a side by side comparison with this Sony and the Monoprice premium select 8 subwoofer, and the Monoprice out performed it in every way.
I have no experience with the Monoprice Premium Select 8 subwoofer so can't comment on it's performance. If what you say is true, then that's pretty impressive. Most of these cheap subwoofers all use high q drivers in them which make them sound very one note-ish to me. Would you classify the Monoprice subwoofer as one note-ish sounding? Just curious.
I'm glad I did some research and comparisons before getting those Elacs! I am a novice, could anyone please explain further what the brass nuts can help improve to the speakers? Or what are ferromagnetic materials/parts causing to the signal? Does it make a major difference overtime? First time on this channel, many thanks for this detailed review and tear down :)

Awesome video! Are you still using your Frankenstein Klipsch R-10sw? Based off of your reviews, I got a R-120Swi from Costco for $150! More than happy with it. Have a good one, man!
Thank you! Absolutely! FrankenKlipsch still makes an appearance in the rotation in my system. Yeah, I saw those at Costco in December and they offer great value for money. Enjoy it!
@@generationbehindhifi Great to hear! Will probably do something similar to mine in the near future. Hoping to replace the 12 inch driver with one from the older Sunfire HRS-12, coupled with a plate amp from parts express. Really do appreciate all of the knowledge you share on this channel. Keep up the good work.
@decafnation5634 you might be better off with a flat pack if you are going to replace everything anyways
@@Pete.across.the.street Very true, maybe one of the parts express ultimax flat packs. Appreciate the input!
Svs is junk. Power Sound Audio is where its at . Have a pair of TV2112.
This is a cool demo! I already have the KEF Q350's, but heard a lot of the ELAC Debut 3.0 63's. So it was nice to hear them compared to the speaker I already have. First things first. The JBL was immediately out of contention as I found it bit boomy in the bass and the highs were a bit biting. A little shrill. Probably because of the horn design. Now, getting to the KEF / Elac comparison. I am going to say that I liked both. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the Elac as many say that Elac is known for very warm sound. As it turned out, the KEF's where the one with the warmer high end, whereas the Elac's had a bit of a brighter high end. It was a pleasing high end though and not shrill like the JBL's. As for the bass, the KEF wins it out of the three. The ELAC was the most lean sounding in the bass, but that was a good thing in a way. It was very tight and smooth. Although, I will say that I like the extension better on the KEF's. So for me, it was a tie for the KEF's and Elacs. If I absolutely HAD to pick a single pair...Okay, I will give it to the Elac as it has a slightly brighter and more lively high end. Does this mean that I would run out now and get the Elac's? No. I bought the KEF Q350's just before the ELAC series 3 came out. Really, all I have to do is bump up the treble on the KEF's and I probably could get very close to the high end on the Elacs. As I said in my opening line...cool demo! BTW, how does that fuzzy speaker all the way to the right sound? The one with the orange-ish finish. I think your kitty picks the Elac's too!
When a speaker is biamped vertically, which components of a 2.5 way crossover are bypassed?
That song is completely unintelligible. So I tried listening to it on my Hifi system and I still couldn’t understand the lyrics! So yeah, cool speaker!
LOL! No one can understand the lyrics from Pearl Jam "Yellow Ledbetter" when he is singing. I used to play a joke on my friends by playing this song and saying if you can tell me four words from the lyrics I will by the beer tonight. None of them could ever do it! 🤣
@ that’s hilarious 🤣
Hi, I'm sure you will have a big joy with your beautiful and solid system. I don't own such big towers, I just got Polk T50 and to sub support them i have the only, but good enough, SVS SB1000. Wish you lot of fun!
Very nice looking. I can't wait till you break it in and give us a review.👍
Niiiiiice Is that a dual coil speaker?
I don't think it is but I haven't torn it down yet. I'm still breaking it in.
